Grade 42CrMoS4
Alloy rolled tempered steel for quenching and tempering according to DIN EN 10083/DIN EN ISO 683 or forged according to DIN EN 10250.
Often used for force-transmitting parts with high stresses, such as connecting rods, gear shafts, steering knuckles, gear wheels, where very good toughness properties are required in addition to high strength. Components made from pre-material in the quenched and tempered condition (+QT) can be used without further heat treatment if necessary. The mechanical properties are homogeneous and defined in the DIN standard.
Due to its alloy composition with a comparatively high carbon content, 42CrMo4 is generally difficult to weld. If the focus is on fatigue strength and machining is only of secondary importance, the very similar 42CrMo4 variant – but often with a lower sulphur content – should be considered. In some cases, double certification of both variants 42CrMo(S)4 takes place.
